How to get to Bocas del Toro from Panama City

Flying into Panama City and from there going to Bocas del Toro
Traveling from Panama City to Bocas del Toro is fairly straight forward. The airport is located on Isla Colon, the archipelago's main island and is also known as the Isla Colon International Airport (BOC).
The best way to travel? Well... it depends on what you want: fast and convenient, or taking a bit more time and saving some money. To travel from Panama City to Bocas del Toro there are mainly 3 options:

  • a flight from Panama City to Bocas del Toro (45 minutes)bus from Panama City to Almirante (10 - 11 hours) and a boat to Bocas del Toro (30 minutes)from Panama City to Almirante (10 - 11 hours) and then a Ferry to Bocas del Toro (2 hours)

  • a bus from Panama City to Almirante (10 - 11 hours) and a boat to Bocas del Toro (30 minutes)

  • driving from Panama City to Almirante (10 - 11 hours) and then a Ferry to Bocas del Toro (2 hours)

Flying from Panama City to Bocas del Toro

One way airplane tickets from Panama City to Bocas del Toro cost around $150. We are more than happy to book these flights for you at no additional cost if you intend to study Spanish at our schools or if you're doing tours with us (please contact us). Online reservations can also be made at: www.flyairpanama.com.
AirPanama flies from Panama City to Bocas del Toro both from Tocumen International Airport (PTY, the airport that you will be landing into Panama City) and from Albrook Airport (PAC, also known as Marcos A. Gelabert Airport or former Paitilla Airport).
Logically if you do not intend to spend any time in Panama City during the first part of your trip to Panama, you might as well try to fly directly from Tocumen Airport to Bocas del Toro (BOC). The flight from Tocumen Airport to Bocas del Toro currently takes place in the morning on Thursdays and Sundays around 10:30 a.m. In other words, if you land into Tocumen before 9:00 a.m. you shouldn't have any problem making that connection. If you booked this flight from Tocumen to Bocas del Toro, you have to clear customs and immigration as normal, go to the AirPanama counter to check in and they will provide you with your gate information.
Tocumen Airport, the international airport, is located in the outskirts of Panama City. Albrook Airport, the domestic airport, is located within the city. It's about a 35 minute commute without traffic between both airports, or 1 - 2.5 hours with traffic. A taxi should cost around $45
AirPanama has flights from Albrook Airport to Bocas del Toro. Flights depart daily around 6:30 a.m., 6:45 a.m., 3:30 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. On Sundays AirPanama also offers an 8 a.m. flight. During certain times of the year, flights get completely booked, so make sure to book in advance.
If you manage to find a flight into Panama City's Tocumen Airport that lands before or just after 1:30 p.m. you can make it to Bocas del Toro on that same day flying via Albrook Airport, providing there aren't any delays or major traffic jams in Panama City.
If your flight lands after 1:30 p.m. and you weren't able to secure a flight from Tocumen Airport either, you will have to spend a night in Panama City. The reason for this is because the last flight from Panama City to Bocas del Toro from Albrook departs around 4:30 p.m., which means you have to be at the domestic airport by 3:30 p.m.
Both domestic airlines have a 25 - 35 pound baggage allowance and on their websites they say that: "any excess baggage is accepted as baggage conditional and subject to available space inside the aircraft. If there is available space would be sent on the same flight, otherwise it will be sent on the next flight". To this date we have NEVER heard of someone not being able to take all of their luggage on a flight from Panama City to Bocas del Toro so no worries!
AirPanama has daily flights from Bocas del Toro to Panama City at 4:45 p.m. Monday to Saturdays they also fly at 8:00 a.m. and on Sundays they fly back at 9:15 a.m. They also have a flight to Tocumen Airport on Thursdays and Sundays.

Panama City to Almirante by Bus, and then a Boat to Bocas del Toro.

If you want to save some money, then taking an overnight bus from Panama City to Almirante (10 - 11 hours), and then a boat from Almirante to Bocas del Toro (30 minutes) is the way to go.
To make this happen you first have to take a taxi from Tocumen Airport ($35) or from your hotel in Panama City to Albrook Bus Terminal (Gran Terminal de Transporte, www.grantnt.com). And from there you can get your bus to Almirante. We arrange private transfers from the airport to the bus station for our Spanish students ($45), in which case one of our drivers will be waiting for you at the airport with a sign with your name on it.
The Bocas del Toro bus ticket office numbers are: 303-6326 and 303-6327 in Panama City, and 758-8127 in Bocas del Toro.
The only dates when you will not be able to easily catch a bus is when it is a Panamanian National Holiday or when there is school break (3 times a year and dates constantly change). On these days you are better of booking a flight from Panama City to Bocas del Toro because buses can get chaotic.
Once you arrive to Almirante, you can pay any taxi $1 to take you from the bus stop to the docks from where the boats depart to Bocas del Toro.
Overnight buses from Panama City to Almirante depart at 7p.m., 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m and take around 10 to 11 hours. Busses are air conditioned, modern and have reclinable seats. You will arrive to Almirante between 6 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. The first boat to Isla Colón (Bocas del Toro's main island, where our Spanish school is) departs at 6 a.m. and takes 30 minutes. Boats depart every 30 minutes until 6 p.m. The cost for the overnight bus ticket is approximately $30 and the boat (water taxi) costs $5. On Sundays, there is also a bus that leaves Panama City at 7 a.m.
Currently there are three water taxi companies: Bocas Marine Tours ($5 per person), Transporte Torres and Taxi 25.
The bus that will take you back from Almirante to Panama City departs daily at 8 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Alternative: By Bus from David to Almirante (or from Boquete to David and then Almirante)
If the above bus schedules don't work for you (because you arrive into Panama City in the morning or late at night, and don't want to spend a night in Panama City), you can always take a bus to David (6 - 7 hours, $15) and from the bus terminal in David, then take a bus to Almirante (3.5 - 4.5 hours, $8). Busses from Panama City to David depart almost every hour, with the first one leaving at 5:30 a.m. and the last one leaving at 12 midnight. Busses from David to Almirante start at 4:30 a.m. and end at 9 p.m. The bus that takes you to Almirante is the one going to Changuinola. If you were visiting Boquete, you also have to go David to get to Almirante. Busses from Boquete to David start at 5:30 a.m. and run until 7 p.m.
As stated above, it's important to note, that the last boat from Almirante to Bocas del Toro departs at 6 p.m. After that there are no boats to Isla Colon, Bocas del Toro's main island, until the next morning. So if you arrive after dark, you really should spend the night in a hotel in Almirante. Sometimes someone offers boat rides at night at overpriced rates but it is not advisable at all to take a boat in the dark, as fatal accidents have happened in the past, because of boats not having appropriate lights for the evening (it doesn't have to be your boat the one without lights!).
Busses from Almirante to David depart every 30 minutes and run from 4 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Driving from Panama City to Almirante, and then a Ferry to Bocas del Toro.

If you're just visiting Bocas del Toro, there really isn't any reason you'd want to have a car in Bocas del Toro. Almost everything is within walking distance. Taxis and minibuses aren't expensive and can take you to all of the beaches and surf breaks on Isla Colon. If you want to go to another island, the only way to do that is by boat. So the only reason you'd want to bring a car to Bocas del Toro is if you're relocating here and will be living out of town. If you are renting a car during your Panama vacation you can always leave it at one of the public parking places in Almirante that charge $3 per night, are fenced in and are perfectly safe.
Having said all of this, if you want to drive from Panama City to Almirante and the cross your car over on the Ferry (Palanga Ferry, www.ferrybocas.com, Andrés Cerrud, 6615-6674, 261-0350), here is how to do it. First of all, you have to exit Panama City and get on the Interamerican highway. There are two bridges that will allow you to cross the Panama Canal: El Puente de las Américas and El Puente Centenario. Once you leave Panama City you just have to drive on the Interamerican highway to the West for about 400 km until you reach a town called "Chiriqui" . If you arrive to David, you've gone too far: turn back! At the town called Chiriqui you should be able to see a sign indicating that Almirante and Chiriqui Grande are to your right (North). It's also sign posted Gualaca which is a town about 30 minutes ahead. Basically you follow that new road up North. It's very windy and with lots of hills. If it's rained a lot there could be mudslides. You drive on this road for about 2.5 hours (95 km) until you reach a town called Chiriqui Grande. At Chiriqui Grande you will turn left (West again) and drive for a bit more than 60 kms until you reach Almirante.
In Almirante you should ask someone to direct you to the Ferry. The Ferry leaves on Tuesdays to Sundays at 8 a.m. and they start boarding vehicles at 7 a.m. There is no way to make a reservation and it's strictly a first in line, first to get on bases. Sometimes you have to line up from the night before (another reason to not bring your car over). Having said that, it is openly known that certain firemen at the fire station are willing to take care of your car, put in line the night before and put it on the ferry on the next day for $10 - $15.The ferry returns to Almirante at 4 p.m.

Sailing in Bocas del toro with us

The jungle, queen, invades the beaches fringed by reeds and mangroves. The eyes are at the borders of the sun, which seems to outline in the distance what man defines infinity. We are in the province of Bocas del Toro, in the state of Panama, just 32 km from Costa Rica, a land border which is home to six beautiful islands covered with dense forests, a multitude of uninhabited islets and the first marine park in Panama: the Parque Nacional Marino Isla Bastimentos. When Christopher Columbus arrived on the archipelago of Bocas del Toro, on his last voyage to the New World, was fascinated by this wonderful place, so much to baptize in his name and that is how some of the lands that were born: Isla Colon, Isla Cristobal and Bahía de Almirante.

Moving away with a boat, just ten minutes, the palms paradise of Isla Bastimentos, depict an imaginary world, where sea turtles, draw, slow and rhythmic, their footsteps on the wild beaches of the north coast. Looking at the south coast instead, mangrove islets and extensive coral reefs, paint the face of the Parque Nacional Marino Isla Bastimentos.

Isla Solarte, Isla Popa, Cayo Coral, Cayos Zapatillas, Isla Cristobal and Isla de los Pájaros, grounding points are crystallized between coral reefs, where the gaze is solemn bows before the dancing dolphins. On the coast you can see a large boat with the inscription "Chiquita" is right here, in the land of Changuinola, which arise where the famous bananas and through the nearby channel, are transported to their embarkation, to make them taste the world. While sloths, otters, caimans, iguanas and manatees (this is one of the few habitats of Central America for them), spend the hours between the fauna of Humedal de San-San Pond Sak, in the Bosque Protector Palo Seco, a magnificent rainforest is home to birds , armadillos and the distant sounds of mischievous monkeys

One of the main ways the best to visit and to enjoy the beauty of Bocas, is the sailboat. Sailing with Chiribita you can make navigation both within Delli archipelago in the calm waters between the islands of Carenero, Bastimentos and Isla Colon, stopping to snorkeling, as well as make navigation in the open and wonderful Caribbean Sea.
Enjoy great music, food and fun cocktails, for those who want to have good Italian Wine
that we get to Bocas directly from the Italian producers, meeting interesting people from all over the world.

Day trips on a sailing boat to Bocas del Toro

Relax, let go and sail with us
Sailing is one of the most inspiring ways to explore the Caribbean, and Bocas del Toro is certainly not the exception. Being one of the most renowned tour of Bocas del Toro and definitely a favorite among our students of Spanish, the Bluwindsail trip sailing takes place every single day of the week (with a minimum of 4 people).

The bay of dolphins (Dolphin Bay)
Departure at 9:30 am, we raise the spinnaker and sail at a time of Dolphin Bay, where we can admire the bottle-nosed dolphin friend play and eat. With its calm waters and the abundance of delicious jellyfish, dolphins simply adore spending time in this protected bay and over the years we have been able to spot dolphins 95% of the time. If you have never seen dolphins in the wild, get ready for one of the most magical moments. If you have already had this experience, it will not hurt to relive those special moments. These unique creatures are so playful, intelligent and full of joy when you receive it we will look into your eyes while swimming close to our boat to sail.
Mangrove Reef, San Cristobal Island
Mangrove Reef is one of the most diverse coral reefs, near Bocas Del Toro. Its shallow water (be careful not to hit anything!) And the abundance of coralline sponges make this place a favorite with snorkelers of all ages. Mangroves are the ideal place where many marine and estuarine organisms are born, grow and feed, and that is why Mangrove Reef is populated by schools of fish newborn, starfish, sea anemones and sea urchins.
One of the most beautiful snorkeling in Mangrove Reef is the reef will be fully at your disposal. Our guests continually tell us that they have found that coral Mangrove Reef is beautiful and colorful. Maybe it has to do with the fact that Bocas del Toro is home to 95% of the coral species found in the Caribbean. A Mangrove Reef can identify up to 20 species of corals.

The Garden Island Solarte
From Mangrove Reef will raise the spinnaker and we'll let the wind take us to the Garden of Solarte island, where, once again, you can enjoy snorkeling, although in a different kind of barrier. This place boasts some of the best coral in the region and is a must for all divers who visit it. The depth varies from two to eighteen meters. Or if you prefer, you can sunbathe and relax on our sailboat, where you can eat a sandwich fresh, prepared specially for you on the boat, with drinks, cocktails and quiet music. Drop anchor in the sand of The Garden, is a perfect way to explore the reef. Great corals, schools of parrot fish, angel fish and underwater life in a couple of all kinds just waiting for you. The Sergeant Major fish or as we like to call them "pinananas" are in benches to eat the peel pineapple "piña" we drop it ideal for a variety of photographs hectic! From here we raise the sails again, enjoying freshly cut fruit and sail back to the island, in "style tranquilo".

We offer a complete navigation package
P1,P3, P4 for all levels: P1,daily solutions for those who want to start with the sail, P3 for those who want to know and visit the archipelago of Bocas sailing among the islands and not only that we also expect navigation in Ocean, to return driven by the magic of Alesei, the winds that blow for a long time on the Caribbean Sea. Finally, we have also planned a cruise P5,for those who also loves surfing. Reach places very exclusive areas particularly by those who love this sport and that can be reached only by boat.
Come and enjoy the island at this time, in every way imaginable!

Snorkeling & Diving in Bocas

The best places for snorkelling are in Admiral Bay (Bahia de Almirante), where the coral reefs are more protected, waters are usually clear and there are no waves. Some of the snorkelling sites are also scuba diving sites, because many of the reefs go down up to 60 feet (20 meters). Notable are HOSPITAL POINT and THE GARDEN, at the tip of Solarte Key; MANGROVE POINT, BIG BAIGHT and BOCA DEL DRAGO, on the Bay coast of Colon Island; the reefs surrounding CRAWL KEY; CRISTOBAL LIGHT and CRISTOBAL ONE, on the shore of Cristobal Island and ZAPATILLAS KEYS, in the Bastimentos Island National Marine Park. The reefs in this sector of Bocas del Toro islands are very healthy, with a great population of corals and colorful sponges. Most of the reefs drop very gently to the bottom. On the open sea side of the archipelago, visitors can snorkel in the small coral reefs of Bastimentos Island, that lie beyond the beaches, such as OLA CHICA, and nearby WILD CANE KEY. The outer part of the ZAPATILLAS KEYS reefs are not so easy to snorkel, because of the prevailing north wind which creates large waves that break on the reef. These reefs, facing the open sea, form walls from 10 to 40 feet high, with small caves which harbour fish and crabs. This form of reef makes it difficult for the snorkeller, to have a good view of the corals, which in any case aren't so healthy as those on the bay. A different and unique kind of snorkelling attracts some visitors to the mangrove islets of the Marine Park. Due to the clear of the waters, snorkellers can see the beauty and colors of the life on the mangrove roots: sponges, fire corals, casiopeas, starfishes, crabs, crawl and swim on or between the roots. Other fish find refuge in this impresive underwater forest, that is also the nursery of many species.

Surfing in Bocas

Isla Colon hosts a few great breaks ranging from steep, hollow beach breaks such as Bluff beach, to peaky reef breaks such as Playa Paunch and Tiger tails. Be fair warned that the power and strength of waves like Bluff beach should only be surfed by experienced surfers who know how to make steep drops and are experienced tube riders. Access to Bluff beach requires a taxi ride or boat taxi departing from Bocas town, or a long 45 minute bike ride. Reef breaks like Playa Paunch or Tiger tails can be reached by taxi, boat taxi, or a 15 minute bike ride from town. You can enjoy the full beach experience at Paki point, surfing right out front at Tiger tails, then lounging at the surf club, with great food, drinks, Live DJ, yoga – massage days, and cool art. There is also a great beginners beach on the Island called La Feria, where you can find many young kids, girls and boys riding their first waves in Bocas.
Isla Carenero has two great surfing spots, one for beginners and one for the experienced surfer. For tourists that want to try the surfing experience for their first time, they can rent a board or schedule a surfing lesson from the many surf shops/schools in Bocas town such as Mono loco surf school. A great beginner to intermediate wave is Black rock located on the Southeast side of Carenero. For very experienced and respectful surfers, the wave at the Point can offer steep, hollow lefts that deliver some of the longest rides in Bocas. “La Punta” will also be one of the more crowded waves around with many of Bocas del Toro’s best local surfers tearing it up on the good days.
Isla Bastimentos has some of the best beach breaks around, such as Wizard beach, Third beach and Long beach. Access to these waves requires a 10 to 30 minute boat taxi from Bocas town, or a long walk if you are staying on Bastimentos. For the expert local surfers or travellers who’s timing is perfect, there is a Right hand Reef break called Silverbacks, which rarely breaks unless the waves are 15 - 20 Foot. This break is the heaviest wave around and rivals some of the big wave breaks on Hawaii’s North shore.
